“At the United Way of Westmoreland County, we focus on moving the needle on critical issues in this community. We use the Self-Sufficiency Standard to get everyone –teachers, manufactures, government leaders—on the same page. It is an easy to understand, real world illustration of what it takes to live a self sufficient life in our community. At a recent meeting with manufacturing organization looking to recruit workers, the assembled CEOs were surprised at the costs families incur. I used the Standard as a jumping off point to talk about the need for high quality child care, access to health care, and decent wages.
